As an Ice Bucket “Challenged” and “Challenger”, I would first like to say that yes, it was really cold, heart stopping, and quite fun all at the same time. Honestly, there wouldn’t be so many people doing it if it didn’t appeal to the little kid inside of us. As you have watched the viral wave of people doing the challenge I am sure you have noticed how many kids have actually begged to get in on the challenge. That aside, let’s talks about the origin of the event. The actual origin is unknown yet there are noted instances of this “challenge” happening around the US and UK starting from 2013. The cause of choice has all been different, and in many instances was centered on a group or organization all dumping water on themselves at one time for that cause.
I give kudos to whoever chose ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for jumping on this challenge and really making it their own. However or wherever it started for ALS, they have now raised over 88.5 Million dollars as of Tuesday 8-26-14 as sited from the Huffington Post.
I personally did the challenge, as I mentioned, but I put my own twist on it. I raise money all year long for Alzheimer’s research, so I donated a small amount to ALS and promoted my many efforts in raising awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. I in turn challenged the rest of my Alzheimer’s Walk team to do the same. This twist among many other types of twists or refusals have laid claim to much criticism. There are a number of reasons why people refuse or go against the challenge. Some of which include stating the point that people are missing the point to actually donate money or going against certain beliefs in which ALS research and testing might partake in.
So let us stop pretending we did this because we had to, and admit that it was a little bit fun, and lets continue to raise money for any cause that we feel a passion for!
